In 2007, 3 mothers Patricia Lonergan, Maria McDaid and Cecilia Porchetta met an Indian Priest, Fr Joson Tharakan, who had come to Glasgow for the summer. Fr Joson highlighted the plight of children that were unable to attend school in India as they did not have the funds for uniforms, books and writing materials. They wanted to make a difference and so in 2008, with the kind support of friends and family 200 children were soon being sponsored through education. This was the start of what we now know as “Mothers Care India”.
Sadly, in 2009, one of the original trio of mothers, Cecilia Porchetta was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and died in February 2010, aged 56.
In 2010, Mothers Care India became a registered charity and since then has supported more than 2000 children through education. Mothers Care India is reliant on the generosity of people who donate, sponsor children or give up their valuable time for our charity. From several visits to India, we have been able to witness at first hand the difference that an education can make to these children.
